Reading circle session on Ibn Hazm

The Ring of the Dove

The Andalusian philosopher Ibn Hazm—born in Córdoba in 994 CE—blended scholarship with statesmanship. He belonged to the Zahiri school of thought, and as his views contradicted those of the majority of the Muslim population, some of his works were heavily criticized and even burned.

The Ring of the Dove is one of his rare prose works and examines forms of love through personal observation, making it a treasured resource in both psychological and sociological contexts. Ibn Hazm's understanding of love, the era's perspective on love, and his interpretations create a unique inner world. Using the metaphorical title, the author pays literary tribute to love.
