The Basmala "Bismillahirrahmanirrahim" means: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. The Basmala means to remember Allah. It means to begin with His name.
The Basmala found at the beginning of chapters in the Quran also appears in verse 30 of Surah an-Naml. According to some views, it is the first verse of Surah al-Fatiha. The Basmala appears at the beginning of all chapters except Surah at-Tawba.
According to the narration of Abu Hurairah (r.a.), the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.) said:
"Every meaningful word or deed that does not begin with the remembrance of the Exalted Allah is without blessing/fruitless."
(Ibn Hanbal, II, 360.)
